Chapter 7.2 Mount Erebus

چکیده

Abstract Erebus volcano, Antarctica, is the southernmost active volcano on globe. Despite its remoteness and harsh conditions, provides an unprecedented unique opportunity to study petrogenesis evolution, as well passive explosive degassing, of alkaline magmatic system with a persistently open magma-filled conduit. In this chapter, we review nearly five decades scientific research related including geological, geophysical, geochemical microbiological observations interpretations. Mount truly one world's most significant natural laboratories where lofty goal studying volcanic from mantle microbe being realized.

Wettergreen, D., Thorpe, C. and Whittaker, R., Exploring Mount Erebus by walking robot, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, 11 (1993) 171-185. Dante is a tethered walking robot capable of climbing steep slopes. In 1992 it was created at Carnegie Mellon University and deployed in Antarctica to explore an active volcano, Mount Erebus. The Dante project's robot science objectives were to demonstrate ...

Enumeration of thermophilic heterotrophs in geothermally heated soils from mount erebus, ross island, antarctica.

Soil samples with temperatures up to 64 degrees C were collected from Mount Erebus, an active volcano located on Ross Island, Antarctica. Acridine orange direct counts and most probable number counts of soil samples stored at 4 degrees C for 2 months showed a wide variation in the number of thermophilic microorganisms in different soils. Organisms similar to Clostridium thermohydrosulfuricum, B...

Analysis of Seismic Similarity in Strombolian Eruptions from Mount Erebus, Antarctica By

II ABSTRACT Mount Erebus has long been recognized to produce very similar seismic signatures associated with its Strombolian eruptions. decorrelation of the coda, accompanied by relative stability in the early seismogram. Using coda wave interferometry, this decorrelation was interpreted as a median change within the volcano. Closer examination of this data in this thesis shows that clipping du...

Fungal Diversity in a Dark Oligotrophic Volcanic Ecosystem (DOVE) on Mount Erebus, Antarctica

Fumarolic Ice caves on Antarctica's Mt. Erebus contain a dark oligotrophic volcanic ecosystem (DOVE) and represent a deep biosphere habitat that can provide insight into microbial communities that utilize energy sources other than photosynthesis. The community assembly and role of fungi in these environments remains largely unknown. However, these habitats could be relatively easily contaminate...

Sulfur Degassing from Mt. Erebus Volcano, Antarctica

SO2 emission rates from Erebus volcano show periodicity, which directly relates to lava lake convection and magma and conduit processes. Mt. Erebus is a 3794 m stratovolcano with a persistently degassing convecting, phonolite lava lake. Lava lake SO2 emission rates were collected from 1992 to 2003 using the correlation spectrometer (COSPEC) and in 2003 and 2005 using a miniature ultra-violet di...
